Hey

I know my two proxy servers - proxer.co.uk and unblockit.co.uk may have been blocked at your school/work by now. So im working on making a new one which won't get blocked very easily. My school uses something called Websense which is the blocking software managed by our county council, but yours will probably be different. Anyway, I've found out that sites get blocked in 3 ways:

1. Their spiders crawl the website looking for keywords such as 'proxy, porn, xxx, games etc...' and then categories them eg. gaming sites, porn sites, proxy servers... and blocks them acordingly.

2. Manually blocked by a staff member at Websense

3. Manually blocked by School Admins

I'm not 100% sure on the spider crawling bit but there is no way staff approve/block every site on the net! I think that whenever u go on a new site that Websense havnt seen before then it is automatically queued up to be crawled. So the first time u go on it, it will be unblocked, then the next time it may be blocked.

Anyway, my new idea is to make the site a fully working eductional site with an educational domain name. This way if the site is visited by your School Admins, (Websense) Staff or the spider, then to them it will just look like a harmless eductional website and they wont think anything of it.

But the sneaky part will be ill just add a proxy server somewhere hidden on the site like http://www.domain.com/maths. And even that page will appear like a maths page, then ill have a bar on the left which you drag to the right and reveal the proxy server. School admins will have no idea how to find it.

I'll add this in the header of the site:

<meta name="robots" content="NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW, NOCACHE, NOARCHIVE">

Which should stop the crawler from searching the site.

I'll also take out any keywords such as 'proxy' and 'unblock' from the page.

I think all this should be enough to stop it being blocked. And hopefuly we will all have a decent proxy server to use without having to try and find a new one each day!

Ill keep you posted with when it should be done

Brucey

That sounds like a good idea!

The way my school does it must be completely down to some kind of crawler, because even if its a site no one has ever been on, as you try and load it, it gets blocked by them before the page loads... so yeh,... :haha:

I just bought the domain name

http://www.learning4you.co.uk

Very eductional haha

It's not online yet, ill put it together some time on sunday so it should be ready for monday

BTW im thinking of adding a password protect to it as well, that will def stop crawlers, im thinking that will ignore the

<meta name="robots" content="NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW, NOCACHE, NOARCHIVE">

Command. But they won't be able to get into a restricted area. I'll post the username and password on here so you will all know it.

I'm 99% sure crawlers wont be able to block it then
